Seasonal and Diurnal Cycle of the thunderstorms observed in South America

چکیده
This study describes the daily lighting cycle and the annual thunderstorm distribution as observed by the Precipitation Radar (PR), the Visible and Infrared Scanner (VIRS) and the Lightning Imaging Sensor (LIS) on board the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite over South America. Based on a TRMM measurements from 1998 through 2011, a database of individual thunderstorms have been created in the area of 10N-40S and 90-30W. To cluster individual thunderstorms, VIRS 10.8 μm channel is used to delineate the clouds and LIS is employed to check if it has lightning (thunderstorm) or not. Clustering the observed thunderstorms on 10 × 10 degree grid boxes it was possible to observe a season variation between south and north hemisphere.

Periodicity of Downward Longwave Radiation at an Equatorial Location
A good understanding of the diverse mechanisms in the atmosphere is required in modelling the climate. In this study, the diurnal and seasonal patterns of all-sky downward longwave radiation (DLR) at Ilorin (8o 32l N, 4o 34l E), Nigeria were investigated alongside relative humidity (RH) and temperature. The average diurnal pattern of DLR gives an arc that begins by increasing gradually with som...

Thunderstorms are one of the most important, abundant and severe atmospheric hazards. In addition to destroying a large amount of agricultural products and construction projects, cause many human casualties are annually in different parts of the world (Iran Pour and et al, 2015). This phenomenon is associated with severe storms, showery precipitation, hail (Puranik and Karekar, 2004), and thund...
متن کاملSpatial Analysis of thunder storm in Iran
Thunderstorms are major climatic events due to the significant effects and catastrophic consequences on humans and the natural environment. The researches have shown that the elevation and latitude factors are two variables that can affect the occurrence of this phenomenon. Therefore, the main aim of this study is to investigate the spatial analysis of the effects of lightning and its effects o...
متن کاملDiurnal Variations of Global Thunderstorms and Electrified Shower Clouds and Their Contribution to the Global Electrical Circuit
The long-standing mainstay of support for C. T. R. Wilson’s global circuit hypothesis is the similarity between the diurnal variation of thunderstorm days in universal time and the Carnegie curve of electrical potential gradient. This rough agreement has sustained the widespread view that thunderstorms are the ‘‘batteries’’ for the global electrical circuit. This study utilizes 10 years of Trop...
متن کاملVariation of ionospheric slab thickness over South Africa
Ionospheric slab thickness is defined as the ratio of TEC to maximum electron density of the F-region (NmF2), proportional to the square of the F2-layer critical frequency (foF2). It is an important parameter in that it is linearly correlated with scale height of the ionosphere, which is related to electron density profile. It also reflects variation of the neutral temperature. Therefore, ionos...
